We want our children to leave our school with a knowledge of classic and modern fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. They will develop a love of reading and books. Our children will leave us as clear communicators, both in written and spoken English. They will understand that writing has a purpose, and will have a range of writing experiences during their school career.

Our pupils will have time for silent reading, in addition to whole class or group guided reading every week, where they are taught the key reading skills that they must learn to be successful readers. There will be a new class novel each long term, which has been carefully chosen by school staff to match the Study Concept, and which teaches key literacy skills. In writing lessons, pupils will explore a wide range of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, learning the features of the texts, and applying previous and new knowledge to a new piece of writing. Children will have the opportunity to develop their vocabulary and understanding of English grammar during each unit of work. Each piece of writing will have a clear purpose, giving meaning to the task. Pupils will experience spelling sessions each week, in which they explore spelling patterns and rules, and later the etymology of the words that they learn. They will receive regular feedback on their written work and reading, that allows them to fully understand how they can improve.

Our children have a love of reading and writing. They read for pleasure both at home and at school, and can discuss the wide range of books that they enjoy. Hill View pupils are competent writers, who understand how to write clear sentences in standard English. As they move through school, they will gain an understanding of how to write for different purposes and audiences, through real-life writing contexts. They will apply the techniques and features they have learnt from their reading in their own writing. Our children will learn a range of spelling patterns and rules, and apply these in their writing. They will make use of dictionaries that will support them to spell trickier words. Our children will choose ambitious vocabulary for their writing, and will have a range of strategies to ensure that their spelling is accurate.

The Teaching of Phonics

At Hill View School we use the RWInc scheme to teach phonics starting in our Nursery when the children are settled and ready to begin learning phonics.  Below are some useful parent guides to hep support parents at home.
