At Hill View Primary School, we believe in a fully inclusive curriculum that allows our children to progress and grow as learners. Geography helps to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world and by using the National Curriculum as a guide, we have designed a curriculum that enables children to:

  • Develop their curiosity and fascination about the world and its people, that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
  • Feel encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it and impact upon it.
  • Gain a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.
  • Develop their knowledge and skills that are transferable to other curriculum areas which can be used to promote their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Geography at Hill View is taught through study blocks, providing children with a ‘big question’ that they will re-visit and discuss throughout the planned block of study. Teachers have identified the key knowledge and skills required in each study block and build this into of each of their planned lessons; ensuring progression is made and can then continue throughout each year group across the school. At the beginning of each topic in Geography, children are able to convey what they know already as well as what they would like to find out. This informs the programme of study and also ensures that lessons are relevant and take account of children’s different starting points. Consideration is given to how greater depth will be taught, learnt and demonstrated within each lesson, as well as how learners will be supported in line with the school’s commitment to inclusion.
The local area is fully utilised to achieve the desired outcomes, with extensive opportunities for learning outside the classroom embedded in practice.

Hill View pupils will progress to their next stage of life as well informed, conscientious people who understand that how they live their lives has a direct impact on both their local community and the wider world. They will have a full understanding of their neighborhood and town, with a deep knowledge of the natural and man-made aspects of their area. Each study block will be reflected upon and summarized in a high quality written outcome.
