Art

INTENT

The aim of teaching Art at Hill View Primary School is to build on our young people’s confidence and character through both arts and a cultural education. We aim to inspire and engage our children within a wide range of Art experiences throughout their years at our school. Our curriculum framework is clear and flexible and embeds creativity across the whole school curriculum.

IMPLEMENTATION

Art Curriculum

The rationale behind our curriculum content is that we ensure all our children develop a range of art skills throughout each year at school. Within our art and design learning progression document development of skills are evident throughout each year group. Certain key skills, such as sketching and watercolour painting, are revisited regularly within the year to develop technique and confidence within these areas. To highlight here from EYFS our children are encouraged to paint using little brush strokes with a 0 paint brush. This technique is continued throughout the school - supporting the development of our children’s fine motor skills and their expertise within this area.

Every Art unit is linked into the topic by theme, thus giving more relevance to our children’s learning experience. Every other term children learn about a famous artist; widening their knowledge of the Arts.

We are an Arts Awards delivery centre. Each academic year we support thirty children to take part in their initial Arts Awards – these are unique qualifications from Trinity College London. They inspire children to connect and take part in the wider arts around them.

As a school we take part in The National Gallery’s yearly ‘Take One Picture’ project. This country wide scheme for primary schools aims to inspire a lifelong love of art and learning by promoting the role of visual arts within education.

IMPACT

Our intended outcome for 2019-2020 are:

  • For our teachers to receive a yearly Art skills inset.
  • For our children to assess their development of arts skills through a self assessment model.
  • To ensure all Arts awards students take part in a gallery visit.
  • To increase our uptake of Arts Awards yearly.
  • To develop our links between Drama and writing.
  • To implement an Y6 transition project where the Arts are used to ease our children’s concerns around transition and support their mental health.
