Religious Studies

INTENT

We believe that it is vital for all our pupils to learn from and about religion, so that they can understand the world around them. Through religious studies, pupils develop their knowledge of the world faiths, and their understanding and awareness of the beliefs, values and traditions of their own and other individuals, societies, communities and cultures. We encourage our pupils to ask questions about the world and to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences.

IMPLEMENTATION

We base our learning on the Oxfordshire Agreed Syllabus. The substantive and procedural knowledge progress from EYFS to Year 6. In EYFS the pupils learn about many important festivals and holidays of different religions. In Key Stage One the pupils gain a deep knowledge of six key religions; Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism and Sikhism. They learn about the special people, places, books, festivals and stories of each religion. In Key Stage Two this knowledge is drawn upon to answer six Big Questions each year, demanding a critical and reflective approach.

IMPACT

Hill View Pupils become critical thinkers, reflective participants in discussion and debate, and open-minded, tolerant and celebratory when learning about other religions and traditions. They don’t accept what they hear or read about other faiths at face value, and understand the importance of seeking different points of view and sources of information before settling upon their own opinions. They celebrate different faiths and can clearly see the similarities, as well as differences, between the religious communities both near and far.
