Years 1 and 2 Music

In Year 1 and 2, we learn to sing familiar songs and join in with simple accompaniments using glockenspiels. We also begin to explore simple part singing, such as call and response songs or simple rounds.

We learn about the correct way to play the glockenspiel and about staying in time with the music. We also begin to learn about some note values, through our ‘Note Value Family’ – Daddy Semibreve, Mummy Minim, Big Brother Crotchet and the Little Quaver Twins. We learn about rhythm through clapping familiar words such as our names, then begin to explore and create our own rhythm patterns using pictures and simple words.

In our composition unit we begin by looking at a familiar text or concept, such as fireworks; then we explore different tuned and untuned percussion, explaining our ideas and making choices about which instruments best reflect the character, event, idea or sound that we want to express. We then work together in groups to build a simple composition, making choices about the sequence of instruments and how we want to layer our sounds.
