In Year 5 and 6, we make more informed choices about our compositions, thinking more about the impact we want to create and the effect our music has on the listener.
We use Garageband to create more complex musical compositions, combining instruments with different samples to create a piece of music inspired by our topic work. We consider how structure, timbre, tempo and dynamics can help to change the mood of a piece of music and evaluate our own work, and that of our friends, considering the effectiveness of our choices. We learn about concepts such as syncopation and ostinato and begin to create our own compositions that include these elements. We also learn about the stave and begin to understand how to read simple music.
In our singing unit, we take on more challenging songs involving a wider range of skills. During our WW2 topic, we learn ‘That Night of Death’ – a poem about the bombing of Coventry, which we perform as a rap against the backing of ‘In the End’ by Linkin Park.
